An Intercept Project

Legal & Security Risk Review

Journalism today requires more than great reporting; it demands strategic protection against legal, regulatory, and security threats. Our Risk Review provides newsrooms with a thorough assessment of vulnerabilities and a customized action plan to strengthen defenses.

This program emerged from The Intercept’s own comprehensive risk assessment: We’ve tested these approaches internally and understand what works in practice. We focus on reasonable, implementable improvements that fit your budget and operational capacity — not theoretical ideals.

We take a broad approach to newsroom protection, examining a variety of critical areas focused on today’s threats. We begin with a regulatory compliance review, ensuring your newsroom’s structure and operations can withstand regulatory scrutiny. We provide resources to analyze your media insurance coverage. Our operational security assessment examines your digital infrastructure and protocols for protecting sources and sensitive information. For any needs we identify that we cannot address, we connect you to the appropriate service provider.

While no assessment can eliminate all risks, our review can identify some of the most common vulnerabilities facing nonprofit newsrooms today.

How It Works:

• Intake: Our team conducts a comprehensive review of your newsroom’s operations, examining everything from editorial protocols to technological infrastructure.

• Customized Action Plan: We help you identify your top vulnerabilities and develop practical, business-oriented solutions tailored to your organization’s size, resources, and risk profile.

• Implementation Support: We don’t just hand you a report — we work with your team to identify legal and security resources to implement solutions and provide small grants and expert hands-on support to cover necessary improvements.

• Operationalize the Advice: It is not enough to know what to do. Often small news organizations need help implementing the solutions. That is our strength.
