Rapid Response Fund

Freelance reporters and photographers, along with staff from small outlets, are frequently on the front lines of breaking news situations, ensuring the public stays informed about matters of significant public interest. Yet these journalists often face targeted violence, legal intimidation, and financial hardship while performing this essential democratic function.

When journalists face threats, time is critical.

Our Rapid Response Fund provides financial assistance to news organizations and individual reporters confronting legal challenges, safety threats, and other urgent situations that could silence critical journalism.

We provide emergency grants for:

Safety and Security: Emergency medical support, protective equipment for protests, and other urgent safety needs.

Legal Support: Small grants to offset expenses associated with legal threats and litigation.

We understand that journalists seeking emergency assistance may be in vulnerable situations. All requests are handled with complete confidentiality, and we work quickly to provide support without adding bureaucratic burdens during crisis situations.

To request emergency assistance, please fill out this encrypted form or reach out to us. Our grant sizes range from $500 to $5,000; we will consider larger requests on a case-by-case basis.
